![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Most of the book is a blend of what was written in 19, but some large chunks and scenes come from just one version.I’d included him back in the first version and saw no reason to change him. I resisted the temptation to drop a Bridgerton into the story, but I did keep the mention of the Duke of Ashbourne, who was the hero of Splendid.I found the process enormously exciting and enriching-it was the first time in years I was free to just write, without having to worry about what was going to happen next. I’d planned to spend 2-3 weeks cleaning it up, but I quickly realized I’d need 2-3 months. With the Bridgerton series complete, 2007 seemed the perfect time. For various reasons, it never quite made it onto the publishing schedule, but I always thought it was the best of my early books, so I kept waiting for the right moment to finally publish it. Version 1.0 of The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever was written in 1994, just after Splendid (my first novel) was bought for publication. ![]()

![]() Isadora also has a difficult time with love, like most people her age do. The grudge grows as soon as she finds out about her mother’s pregnancy. She thinks her parents never truly loved her, especially since they made her mortal while the rest of her relatives get to live forever. Isadora’s feelings, as White relays them, are relatable. ![]() It’s confusing, but totally understandable. Although she may resent her parents, she still plans to build a museum dedicated to them someday. She makes friends with interesting fellows like energetic Tyler and the Greek boy Ry, and her days in California are an odd mix of interior design and worshipping god. Other than having immortals for parents, Isadora leads a typical life. ![]() Here, author Kiersten White puts a spin on family drama with Egyptian mythology. Dark, terrifying dreams haunt her at night and they’re dangerous enough to kill a god. ![]() The Chaos of Stars traces her steps as she runs off to California in the hopes of escaping their clutches and living a separate life, but she soon realizes that her connection to her parents is much more complicated than mere geography. No one knows that better than Isadora, who is the mortal offspring of Isis, the goddess of magic and wisdom, and Osiris, the god of the dead and ruler of the underworld. Things aren’t easy when you’re the daughter of ancient Egyptian deities. However, about 30-40 pages into it, I was completely sucked into the story and absolutely hanging on each and every word. The book began somewhat slowly, and at first, I found it difficult to keep all the characters straight as they use so many titles plus names. The book inspired in me an interest in British history, and I definitely googled for more information as I read (although you certainly do not need to do so). Her joys, her worries, and her sadnesses were also mine by the end of the novel. ![]() In this book, we get to know Victoria very well- I often felt like I was her confidante, navigating the political and social minefield of the British elite with her. She has developed Victoria as a truly complex character with many sides- pride, wit, lonely, romantic, etc.- making her into someone we could easily imagine knowing well. Victoria really came alive for me in this book how accurate the portrayal is only she could say, but I felt that the insight of Daisy Goodwin was truly remarkable and fascinating. ![]() ![]() ![]() Her papers are held in the research collection of the Huntington Library.
